A Delhi Police inspector, Badrish Dutt, and his female friend were found dead with gunshot injuries to their heads inside a flat at Ardee City in Sector 52 here on Saturday.
Though the police said the sequence of events was not yet clear, it is suspected that the woman shot the 45-year-old Delhi Police Special Cell inspector point-blank with his service revolver following an altercation before turning the gun on herself.
The incident came to light around 11-30 a.m. when a junior colleague of the inspector came looking for him at the second floor flat as he had not been picking up his phone. Badrish’s colleague found the door locked from inside and when he did not get any response, he called up the local police.
The police broke open the door and found the two bodies lying in a pool of blood. “The woman was identified as Geeta Sharma, who owns the flat, and the man as Delhi Police inspector Badrish Dutt. Both had gunshot injuries. The post-mortem will cast more light on the case,” said Gurgaon Police Commissioner Alok Mittal, speaking to the media persons at the spot.
Preliminary investigation suggested that the inspector came to visit the woman around 8 p.m. on Friday and the two fell out over some personal matter following which the woman shot the inspector in the head and committed suicide in a similar fashion.
Badrish, who stayed in Faridabad with his family, allegedly had strained relations with his wife and came in contact with Geeta over a year ago. Forty-five-year-old Geeta, a divorcee, had a criminal background and had spent more than three weeks at Tihar Central Jail in connection with a forgery case before being released on bail a week ago, a senior Gurgaon Police officer said.
Geeta, who ran a private detective agency in Delhi, hailed from Mumbai and her son stays in Singapore.
The woman bore a grudge against the inspector for not bailing her out when she was arrested in the forgery case and it probably led to an altercation between the two, a Gurgaon Police source said.
A lawyer at Saket court and a close friend of Badrish, who reached the spot on hearing about the incident, said: “I had an over two-decade-old friendship with Badrish since he was first posted as sub-inspector at Okhla. He did not have cordial relations with his wife. But he never discussed his relationship with Geeta with me.”
The inspector’s colleagues in the Special Cell said he was one of the finest investigators they had.
“He was conferred the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2003 and then in 2006. He was also given an out-of-turn promotion for his outstanding work. He was with the Special Cell since 1999 and was one of the oldest in the unit. A trusted investigator, he had proved instrumental in neutralising about 20 Kashmir-based militants in the past,” said one of them, describing his death as a great loss to the Special Cell.
