The police have arrested businessman Naveen Uppal, who on Tuesday was found driving with his girlfriend’s body in North Delhi.

It has now emerged that Anjali’s murder was the outcome of a plan made by Naveen who was being blackmailed by the woman with the help of saved mobile chats and other data she purportedly had in her possession, said investigators.

Naveen got married on April 24 and wanted to hide his seven-year-old relationship with Anjali from his wife at any cost but the victim’s incessant warnings to not go ahead with the marriage and threats that she would ruin his life, led him to eliminate her, he purportedly told the police.

Family members also alleged that Anjali had given Rs. 5 lakh to Naveen and was pressurising him to return it.

Going ahead with his plan, Naveen called Anjali to Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station. Anjali left her home in Rohini lying to her husband about going to a temple with a friend. Anjali has two children a 17-year-old son and a 16-month-old daughter and Naveen is the father of the girl, said police sources. Her son dropped her to the nearest metro station and Naveen picked her in his Ford Eco upon reaching Vishwavidyalaya.

“It was around 4 p.m. after which the two kept travelling in his car. During the commute he tried to convince Anjali, which eventually lead to an argument. The more time they spent together, the heated the argument turned. Around 7-30 p.m. when they reached the Bonta Park, he opened fire,” said a senior police officer.

Call details

After murdering her, he deleted calls from his phone. But, Anjali had already taken out the SIM and data card of her mobile and handed over the handset to her son before boarding the metro in Rohini. This foiled Naveen’s plans to delete the videos and WhatsApp chats.

“The first call Naveen made after killing Anjali was to his uncle. In a bid to save Naveen, his uncle made a PCR call that a woman has allegedly committed suicide by shooting herself inside Naveen’s car,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.
