A Delhi court will pronounce the quantum of sentence to five convicts in the Danish woman gang-rape case on Friday.

Additional sessions judge Ramesh Kumar had reserved the judgment for Friday on conclusion of arguments.

The prosecution had sought life imprisonment for all the five convicts — Mahender alia Ganja, Mohd. Raja, Raju, Arjun, Raju Chakk.

‘Barbaric act’

Special prosecutor Atul Srivastava said the convicts had committed the offences against the woman in a barbaric manner. They had dented the reputation of the country in the international community.

As the crime was committed against a foreigner, a message should be sent that the rule of law prevailed in India, Mr. Srivastava said.

Counsel for the convicts argued for a lenient punishment, submitting that they were young and hailed from economically poor background. So, the minimum sentence of 20 years in jail would be enough punishment for them.

On June 6, the court held all the five guilty of gang rape, dacoity, kidnapping, wrongful confinement andcriminal intimidation.
