Cultural programme, lunch for the elderly

A series of events were organised by different arms of the Delhi Government to mark International Day for Elders on Wednesday.

The Department of Social Welfare and Women and Child Development hosted lunch and felicitated a few senior citizens at a private hotel, while Delhi Tourism welcomed senior citizens at the three Dilli Haats at Janakpuri, INA, and Pitampura with a rose and free entry.

The senior citizens were also offered 20 per cent discount on all food items at the Haats, officials said.

At the function at Aavaa Surya Continental Hotel, Rajouri Garden, around 80 senior citizens of the two old age homes at Bindapur and Lampur witnessed a cultural programme presented by children of Nirmal Chhaya.

Besides , the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) disseminated messages on city buses urging commuters to respect and protect the interests of elders, while the Delhi Police honoured senior citizens with greeting cards with safety tips printed on them.

“ The Education Department will organise a painting competition in all the schools on the theme of safeguarding, protecting and respecting the elderly after October 10. International Day for Elders was also observed at various homes for the elderly and Vridhashrams looked after by the department,” said Satbir Bedi, Principal Secretary (Social Welfare).
