Crime show inspires robbery plan; duo held

April 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A popular show on TV, claiming to raise awareness against crime, served as an inspiration for two men who allegedly hatched a plan to stage a robbery of Rs. 75 lakh.

The Delhi Police have arrested two employees of a gold firm including one who claimed that he had been robbed of the payment he had collected for the employer in Delhi Cantonment on April 16. The arrested men have been identified as Kuldeep Raj Verma and Anuj Jain.

It was Anuj who informed the police and his employer Nishant Sarviya on April 16 that he was robbed at gun point.

“He told us that when he reached near metro pillar no. 32-33 on Ring Road, four persons in a car stopped next to him on the pretext of asking some address. They then robbed him of the bag containing Rs. 75.50 lakh at gun point. We registered an FIR and investigations are on,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Surendra Kumar.

Investigations, however, took a different turn when the police found several inconsistencies in the version and sequence of events.

“We interrogated him further and found that he was changing his version repeatedly. Finally, when confronted with the discrepancies, he broke down and confessed his and Kuldeep’s involvement in the case that they were trying to pass off as a robbery,” said another police officer.

The police further learnt that a popular TV series caught their fancy and subsequently came up with a foolproof plan.

“Kuldeep was planning to establish his own business and was in dire need of funds. Anuj wanted to purchase his own flat.

The duo used to watch the serial Savdhaan India (Aired on Life OK channel) in order to execute their plan flawlessly and was waiting for the right opportunity for the last 5-6 months,” said Mr. Kumar.
