A total of 260 vehicles were challaned and 80 impounded during a joint drive conducted by the Gurugram Police, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) against encroachment and illegal parking on Mehrauli-Gurugram (MG) Road on Friday.

‘Smart road’ policy

The drive followed the local administration’s decision to develop MG Road as a ‘smart road’ by adopting a zero-tolerance policy against illegal parking and ensuring it is free from encroachments.

Roadside eateries hit

A joint team initiated the drive around 10.30 a.m. and issued challans to vehicles parked illegally near the Sikandarpur metro station, Bristol Chowk and Mega Mall on Golf Course Road. It also seized the belongings of juice vendors, kiosks and makeshift eateries that dot the road.

Violators warned

Also, illegally parked cars and four-wheelers were impounded while challans were issued to scooters and motorcycles on the spot. The violators were warned of strict action if they repeated the offence.

“The action on MG Road was taken on a stretch between IFFCO Chowk and Sikandapur metro station, and also near Mega Mall on Golf Course Road. Now that the encroachments have been removed, it is the responsibility of the police to ensure that they do not return,” said MCG spokesperson Satyabir Singh Rohilla.

Led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Rohit Yadav, the team comprised Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Deepak Saharan and Assistant Commissioner of Police Harinder Singh.

More drives to follow

Officer Special Duty, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, V. Umashankar had issued directions to carry out a drive on MG Road during a meeting with the Gurugram Police, the Department of Town and Country Planning and the HUDA on March 21. Similar drives are expected to be carried out on other major roads in the Millennium City.

During the meeting, Mr. Umashankar had also said that encroachment and illegal parking reduced the space available for vehicles on the roads, leading to traffic jams.

Also, encroachment on the pavements forced pedestrians to walk on the road. He added that though the MCG regularly carried out anti-encroachment drives, a joint drive was being undertaken for better results.

Mr. Umashankar said that MG Road witnessed major traffic jams during peak hours, which were caused by illegal parking and encroachment.
