The Delhi High Court on Wednesday summoned the entire record pertaining to construction of a basketball stadium at Ajmal Khan Park in Karol Bagh here.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A. P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar summoned the record after going through the papers about award of contract for construction of the stadium. The Court observed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had awarded the contract for construction of the stadium even before getting approval for it from the competent authority.

The Bench pulled up the civic body for construction of the stadium even while knowing it very well that it was the only park in the area.

The Bench wanted to know from the local body about the time when the construction was approved and sanctioned as well as the truth about conversion of a part of the park into a stadium.

The Bench directed the civic body to submit the record before the Court by October 28, the next date of hearing.

The Court had in February this year stayed construction of the stadium.

It has been hearing public interest litigation by voluntary organisation Paryavaran Avam Jan Uthan Mission alleging that the civic body had violated the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 by taking a decision to build the stadium. The civic body had last year decided to extend the stadium into the green area, the petitioner alleged.
