Couple’s suicide bid at metro station

July 24, 2014 03:29 pm | Updated 03:29 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A young couple, both engineering students, allegedly attempted suicide by jumping in front of a train at the Chhatarpur metro station in South Delhi on Wednesday morning.

According to the police, around 10-48 a.m. 27-year-old-man and the 22-year-old woman jumped on the metro track when a train, heading towards Huda City Centre in Gurgaon, arrived on platform no.1 of the station.

The duo was, however, saved in the nick of time by the metro staff.

“The train operator stopped the train by applying emergency brakes and the security staff rescued them from the under-frame of the second coach. Following the incident, operations had to be stopped until the rescue team gave a clearance at 10-57 a.m. Both had received head injuries but were conscious when taken to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences by ambulance,” said a Metro spokesperson.

According to the police, the couple is out of danger.

“The CCTV footage shows that they jumped on the track together. Prima facie it seems that family’s objections to their relationship might have forced them to take the extreme step,” said a senior police official.
