Corridors of Power

Talking about

women power

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan seemed to be in the mood for some plain speak earlier this week during the release of a research document at the Constitution Club when she spoke about old age, death and the relationship a married couple shares.

“I feel women manage the death of a partner better in larger number of cases. We see young widows taking on the responsibility of bringing up children, caring for the old parents and facing the challenges that life throws at them with grit and grace. This struggle is the symbol of the inherent strength women have,” she said amid loud applause from the audience.

She added that society needs to identify, nurture and allow this strength to bloom.

“Every girl child has to be helped to identify her strength, and we as a society have to make sure that she stands tall in every sense of the word,” she added.

Does the CM

know yet?

On Thursday, after the High Court pronounced its order stating that the Lieutenant-Governor was the administrative head of Delhi, the AAP ministers, their staff and other party members in the Delhi Secretariat were visibly dismayed. When a close aide of the Chief Minister was asked about Arvind Kejriwal’s reaction to the judgment, he said the latter was unaware as he was undergoing vipasana (naturopathy) at Dharamshala. “He is not well and we don’t want to cause him any distress. If he gets to know, he won’t be able to stay in the facility,” the aide said. According to Mr. Kejriwal’s staff, the Chief Minister doesn’t know about the HC order.

Uneasy calm

at DERC office

The office of Delhi’s power regulator had been bustling with activity ever since the new chairperson, Krishna Saini, took charge in March. However, an eerie calm now prevails in the office following the High Court’s judgment, which ruled that the L-G was the administrative head of Delhi. While officials at the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) say that work has been going on as usual, they did mention that ongoing court cases have impacted the pace of work. With the hearing on the appointment of the DERC chief scheduled for Monday, all eyes are now set on what happens in the court as several decisions from fresh MYT regulations to revising power tariffs have already been delayed.

Variety is the

spice of life

Over the years, Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan outlets have added new products to the shelves — apart from cloth — with eatables and herbal beauty products finding a way in. In fact, a recent addition is a book by Kalraj Mishra, who is Union Minister for Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Constant enquiries about the book on Hindutva, copies of which are displayed close to the cash counter of the store at Connaught Place, set tongues wagging with questions if this was the right platform for promotion or sale. Ask the staff here about the book and mum’s the word.
