More than 80,000 security personnel drawn from the Delhi Police, Home Guards and para-military forces will be deployed across the Capital for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections this Sunday. Over 11,000 polling booths have been set up for the citizens to cast their votes.
“More than 68,000 Delhi Police personnel and 13,000 Home Guards personnel will be deployed across Delhi for polling on Sunday along with 25 companies of paramilitary forces. A total of 11,632 polling booths have been set up, of which 270 are sensitive and 55 hyper-sensitive,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Election Cell) A. K. Singla.
This election will be the first following trifurcation of the municipal body, and over 2,000 candidates are in fray for 272 wards of the three municipal corporations of North, South and East Delhi.
Giving details of the measures being taken to ensure peaceful elections, Dr. Singla said: “Checking of vehicles at the borders will be intensified on Saturday night to prevent entry of anti-social and criminal elements into the Capital. Pickets have been set up across the city for checking and night patrolling intensified. Foot patrolling has also been increased around polling premises.”
Security around the counting centres will also been increased after the polling on Sunday. “We have already deployed adequate number of security personnel at the 32 counting centres where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be kept till the counting is taken up on Tuesday. Security around these centres will be intensified after the EVMs reach there on Sunday evening,” said Dr. Singla.
