A Punjab Police head constable has been arrested along with his two accomplices for allegedly opening fire at a “dhaba” in Chanakyapuri here on Monday on being asked to pay for the food.

The accused have been identified as Head Constable Amarjeet Singh and two drivers, Ram Karan and Bhim Bahadur.

Amarjeet, who was in police uniform, along with Ram Karan and Bhim reached the “dhaba” at Subzi Mandi Market on Kautilya Marg around 10 p.m. and ordered food. While the three were getting up to leave after having their food, the waiter served them a Rs.295 bill. Amarjeet, who was carrying a pistol, said that men in uniform normally do not pay.

At this, the “dhaba” owner, Arjun Prasad, requested them to make a part payment and one of the trio gave him Rs.200. While Arjun was putting the money in his pocket, Amarjeet allegedly tried to snatch the cash from him. When the “dhaba” owner put up some resistance, Amarjeet along with his accomplices allegedly beat him up and threatened to shoot him. The waiters at the “dhaba” got scared and ran away.

Amarjeet then allegedly fired a shot at Arjun but it missed. He then drove away along with his accomplices in a Sports Utility Vehicle.

One of the persons present at the spot, Rohit, followed the vehicle and found it entering a five-star hotel on Sardar Patel Marg. Meanwhile, somebody made a call to the Police Control Room and the local police reached the spot.

The victim narrated the incident to the police and also told them the accused were at a five-star hotel. The three were later arrested.
