Convict killed inside Tihar jail

Tussle for superiority may have led to attack; probe ordered

In yet another incident of violence being reported from inside Tihar Central Jail, a 29-year-old murder convict was stabbed to death with knives on Wednesday evening.

A Magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Jail officials said they would probe how the prisoners got sharp objects like knife.

In a tussle for superiority, six convicts from the opposition camp repeatedly stabbed a prisoner identified as Ravinder. He was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to jail insiders, the brutal attack took place in front of a warden of the jail number one of Tihar but there was little that he could do to stop it. The unarmed warden rushed to get help, but by the time support arrived, Ravinder had already suffered serious injuries on his neck.

“The attack took place around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday while a warden Karamvir Kaushik was sitting outside one of the wards. His attention was suddenly drawn by a group of convicts chasing a man,” a senior police officer said.

Mukesh, the leader of the assailants who is serving sentence for three different cases, including a murder, led the attack on Ravinder. “Mukesh was at loggerheads with Ravinder over superiority in Tihar jail number one,” the officer added.

By the time Mr. Kaushik rushed to see what was happening, the gang had intercepted Ravinder in a narrow corridor near some toilets meant for prisoners. “They began thrashing Ravinder, but he managed to push them away and enter the gates of his block. But, the assailants managed to enter inside and finally caught hold of Ravinder,” Mr. Kaushik told the police. He said that two men then began stabbing him with knives in his abdomen while Mukesh and another assailant slit his throat.

“On noticing the men armed with sharp objects, I rushed out screaming for help. A head warden and some other prisoners arrived on hearing my voice, but by then the attackers were leaving the spot,” Mr. Kaushik said.
