The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, on Saturday demanded that the Delhi government control an impending rise in prices of fruits and vegetables in the Capital.
According to the ASSOCHAM, Mr. Gupta said, a disturbance in supply chain was responsible for the rise in prices of fruits and vegetables. If the government was able to make the supply chain effective, he said in reference to the ASSOCHAM’s findings, the prices would come down by 50 percent.

“ASSOCHAM has warned that in the coming days, prices of fruits and vegetables may go up by 30 to 40 percent. I demand that the Food and Supply Minister of Delhi take serious note of the warning and to supply fruits and vegetables to the people of Delhi at cheap rates,” Mr. Gupta said.
To ensure availability of fruits and vegetables at cheaper rates, Mr. Gupta said the government should make arrangements for supply through Mother Dairy and Safal, besides opening new shops.
He added that the prices of vegetables had been increased under the garb of issues related to heavy rainfall and that the residents of the Capital were being “forced to spend larger portions of their hard-earned money to purchase fruits and vegetables”, which adversely impacted their domestic budget.
This had also, Mr. Gupta said, affected spending on education and health.
