Even as the party is making all efforts to come to terms with the drubbing in the Assembly elections, the newly-elected legislators of the Congress got into a huddle at the AICC headquarters on Tuesday and gave their feedback about the polls to the party leadership.
The meeting was convened by AICC general secretary and Delhi in-charge Shakeel Ahmed and it was attended by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president J.P. Agarwal and the eight legislators who emerged victorious this time round.
Speaking to media after the meeting which lasted for less than half-an-hour, Mr. Ahmed said the legislators have given their feedback about the polls as well as their suggestions to extend support to the Aam Aadmi Party for forming the next government.
“We congratulated the MLAs for emerging victorious despite the party’s performance in the Assembly election. They were of the view that the party must extend support to the Aam Aadmi Party as fresh elections would be an extra burden on the people. We would appraise the high command about it,” said Mr. Ahmed.
The party, however, postponed electing the leader of the legislature party in the Delhi Assembly. “The meeting was convened just to get the feedback from the legislators. The leader would be decided later,” said Mr. Ahmed.
The eight Congress candidates who emerged victorious include Arvinder Singh Lovely (Gandhi Nagar), Haroon Yusuf (Ballimaran), Mateen Ahmed (Seelampur), Hasan Ahmed (Mustafabad), Prahlad Singh Sawhney (Chandni Chowk), Asif Mohammed Khan (Okhla), Devender Yadav (Badli) and Jai Kishan (Sultanpur Majra).
The MLAs are confused about the actual status and the powers they would enjoy as legislators if Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung recommends President’s rule.
