The opposition Congress in MCD today demanded that the tenants staying in residential and non-residential custodian properties in the national capital should be given ownership rights.
Leader of Opposition in MCD J K Sharma told reporters that the Municipal Commissioner should bring a time-bound scheme for converting these rented properties to lease-hold as it would benefit the civic agency too.
He said 10,625 residential and 3,770 non-residential custodian properties were given by the Central government at nominal rent to refugees who came here from Pakistan during the partition in 1947. These properties were transferred to the MCD in 1966.
“In most of these properties situated in areas like old Delhi, Mehrauli and Lajpat Nagar, the rent is negligible while the MCD is spending Rs one crore on their maintenance every year. Giving the lease-hold rights to the property occupiers will benefit them as well as the MCD,” he said.
He said the tenants are ready to give the fee for converting these properties to lease-hold which will bring revenue for the civic body. Mr. Sharma said proposals were passed in this regard by the MCD House and Standing Committee earlier but these were not implemented by officials.
