Cong. seeks Kejriwal’s resignation

The Delhi Congress on Monday strongly condemned the increasing number of cases of sexual assault and atrocities on minor children in the Capital, in addition to what it claimed was the inaction of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to prevent such crimes.

Seeking Mr. Kejriwal’s resignation the party’s chief spokesperson, Sharmishta Mukherjee, termed the situation in the Capital ironic.

“It is indeed an irony that on the one hand women are treated as ‘goddesses’ in the country, while on the other all kinds of atrocities are being perpetrated against them,” Ms. Mukherjee said at a press conference in the presence of newly sworn-in Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress president Barkha Singh.

Even as four-year-old and two-and-a-half-year-old toddlers were being sexually assaulted in the Capital, Ms. Mukherjee said, the Chief Minister ‘who threatens to make the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sleepless’, had not taken any action to prevent such crimes.

“No words are strong enough to condemn such assaults on small children. When the ‘Nirbhaya’ case occurred in Delhi, Mr. Kejriwal attacked the Sheila Dikshit government in a similar manner, and now we demand his resignation if he cannot prevent sexual assaults on women and minor children,” Ms. Mukherjee said.

Meanwhile, the party has decided to organise a grand procession from the Red Fort to the Prachin Panckuian temple on the occasion of Valmika Jatanti on October 27.

Former MLA Jai Kishan said Congress national vice-president Rahul Gandhi had been requested to be part of the proceedings.
