Congress leaders from across the country will camp in the Capital to assist the Delhi state unit in mobilising support for the upcoming Assembly polls.
A senior party leader told The Hindu , the Central leadership has drawn up a list of prominent party leaders from across north India who will be assigned one of the Capital’s 70 Assembly Constituencies each and would be required to ‘assist the party’s local candidate there’ beginning the day of the notification of the polls.
“Delhi is a microcosm of the nation and has people hailing from different states living together in close-knit communities across it. So, it was decided to bring in leaders from all over the country to make personalised appeals to the voters,” the leader said, adding that the said leaders would be required to camp in the Capital from the date of the notification of the polls to the day of the election.
A party source said the decision was taken after the Central leadership realised that the party's resources, in the form of its prominent leaders, could be put to 'better use' since they were currently free from political activities in their respective home states.
The source said the party's decision, which would translate into formal letters soliciting their presence soon, would also draw prominent party leaders from the South, including recent entrant Khushboo who left the DMK.
Meanwhile, a senior leader said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh recently held a series of discussions with prominent Sikh residents of the Capital to apprise them of the party's plans for Delhi.
“The meeting was held on Friday and seems to have been successful in fulfilling its objective,” a leader said.
