With rain lashing the Capital since Tuesday morning, the already beleaguered city dwellers, facing closure of arterial roads leading to Rail Bhavan on account of the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s protest near Parliament, had a tough time reaching their destinations.
According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded seven notches below normal at 14.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 10.2 degrees, three notches above normal.
The city recorded 4.8 millimetres of rainfall between 8-30 a.m. and 5-30 p.m.
At Palam, the maximum temperature was 15.2 degrees Celsius, the minimum was 8.2 degrees.
Recounting his harrowing time on the road, Anurag Bhatt, a private executive who rides his bike for office work, said: “It took me 50 minutes to reach the Indian Institute of Technology from All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. Roads were slippery and dangerous for bikers. We were confronted with water logged roads at Hauz Khas and Green Park.”
Speaking to The Hindu , National Commission for Minorities chairman Wajahat Habibullah said: “Since I had to go to the India Habitat Centre, I did not face traffic jam. Luckily I did not have to travel towards Shastri Bhawan. But every day when it rains, quite a few roads in Delhi face water-logging.”
Animesh, an engineering executive with a private firm, said he had to skip his daily jogging schedule because of cold weather and intermittent rain.
Driving his car from Rohini to PTI Building, Rajdeep faced traffic jams due to water-logging, particularly at Shadipur and Patel Nagar.
“It took me nearly three hours to reach the PTI Building. It is high time to improve the condition of roads and make life comfortable for motorists.”
The harsh winter coupled with rain made life miserable for street-vendors, especially those in East Delhi and the Walled City.
The weatherman has forecast cloudy sky with possibility of light rain or thundershower in the city on Wednesday.
