The Indian Coast Guard and Jamia Millia Islamia have signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate vertical/ academic mobility of personnel and officers of the maritime organisation.
Under the arrangement, Jamia will open its undergraduate and postgraduate courses to sailors and subsequently to officers of the Coast Guard.
Jamia Vice-Chancellor Talat Ahmad said the tie-up will help sailors and officers complete higher education and improve their job prospects once they retire from the service. “This arrangement will go a long way in preparing them for a career outside the naval services,” he added.
Gurupdesh Singh of the Coast Guard said the arrangement was a great step forward for educational advancement of Coast Guard personnel, especially since they join the service at a relatively young age of 19 years, mostly after passing Class XII.
“Helping them finish their incomplete education will open fresh opportunities for them after they retire at the age of 30-35 years,” he said.
The Coast Guard conducts in-service training programmes/ courses for its personnel at the Navy’s training centres at different locations in the country.
Distance-learning mode
The tie-up with Jamia will help facilitate admissions of personnel who have successfully undergone in-service training programmes/ courses into second or third year of courses at Jamia, allowing them to complete their graduation through distance-learning mode.
