Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday expressed hope that the much-awaited Women's Reservation Bill to be tabled in Parliament next week would get through. She was speaking at a function in connection with the International Women's Day.
Expressing happiness over the fact that the proposed Bill would be tabled on March 8, coinciding with the International Women's Day, Ms. Dikshit said women have contributed immensely towards the overall development and according to an International Labour Organisation survey about three-fourth of the work was done by them.
She said the contribution made by women has never been acknowledged but the situation was going to change in the present century and the work done by them would now be duly evaluated and recognised.
Claiming that her government's “Laadli” scheme for the education of the girl child had led to improvement in the gender ratio, Ms. Dikshit said the celebration of the International Women's Day would encourage women to aspire for quality and equal opportunities.
A large number of women from the weaker sections of society were present at the function.
The Chief Minister administered them an oath to take care of girl children and provide them similar rights and avenues of education as boys.
She also released a booklet titled “Hamare Adhikar” based on rights of women.
