Cloud over police visibility on NCR roads

Like Jewar, officers fail to pick up samples from spot hours after incident

The abduction and gang-rape of the 35-year-old woman from Gurugram has once again raised questions on police visibility on Delhi-NCR roads.

The woman was abducted around 8 p.m. on Monday from M.G. Road in Gurugram and dumped near Greater Noida’s Kasna police station around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. An unverified video on social media shows a policeman sleeping inside his PCR van in Greater Noida, close to the spot where the woman was dumped.

The distance between M.G. Road and Kasna is nearly 55 km. The three miscreants reportedly roamed all over Gurugram and Greater Noida before throwing the victim in a dark corner in Kasna.

Accused drunk?

The victim was dumped near a restaurant close to the police station. Some beer bottles were also found at the crime spot, leading the police to suspect that the accused were inebriated at the time of the incident. However, the officers failed to pick up samples from the spot hours after the incident.

In the case of the Jewar rape, dacoity and murder incident too, the Greater Noida police failed to collect samples from the crime scene for nearly 24 hours.

On a question regarding police alertness, Gautam Budh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Love Kumar said, “It’s premature to comment on the matter. We are probing the case from all angles. We still don’t have proper details regarding the incident. We are scanning CCTV footage from all possible routes to gain leads,” Mr. Kumar said.

‘Roads unfamiliar’

He added the victim is not in a condition to explain the route from Gurugram to Greater Noida. Besides, she told the police that she had come to Gurugram from Rajasthan just 10 days back and isn’t familiar with the roads.
