The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Friday arrested a 34-year-old maulvi in connection with the alleged rape of a minor inside the premises of a madrasa in Ghaziabad on April 21.

A 17-year-old was apprehended in connection with the rape case.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ramgopal Naik confirmed the arrest of the cleric Ghulam Shahid. Sources said that the cleric has been arrested under the POCSO Act for not informing the police about the presence of the minor inside the madrasa.

“It has been established that he was aware of the girl’s presence but he failed to inform the police,” said a senior police officer.

The officer added that so far the probe has not revealed any evidence of the maulvi conspiring against the minor or raping her.

Mr. Shahid was being questioned by the police every day since the incident came to light. On Friday, he was summoned again and arrested. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch on April 24.
