The chorus favouring an Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi grew louder on Saturday, with a significant number of participants in the 80 public meetings organised by the party backing the view, said party leaders.
The leaders claimed that the party had so far received over 7 lakh responses through various channels. Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal is expected to address public meetings in his New Delhi constituency on Sunday. Manish Sisodia from the Patparganj Assembly seat was among the prominent AAP leaders who held Jan Sabhas (public meetings) on Saturday.
“We organised four public meetings in and around the East Vinod Nagar area of the constituency. They drew impressive crowds. A majority of them raised their hands supporting the view that the AAP should form a government with outside support from the Congress. More such meetings are scheduled to be held on Sunday,” said a party representative.
Another public meeting was organised at the Babarpur constituency, where senior AAP leader Gopal Rai lost to his opponent from the BJP. “One public meeting was organised on Saturday and three more are to be held on Sunday,” said a representative. Similar meetings were also organised by Somnath Bharti, the party MLA from Malviya Nagar.
The party had chalked out its plans to organise Jan Sabhas in Rohini, Tilak Nagar, Greater Kailash, Mangolpuri, Matiala, Malviya Nagar and other places well in advance.
“The party MLAs went to their constituencies and addressed the gatherings, seeking their response on whether the AAP should form a government under the present circumstances. The other leaders also participated in public meetings,” said another AAP member, adding that barring few places, the meetings recorded impressive attendance of supporters.
Based on the responses to a referendum sought on the issue, the party had on Friday claimed that there was “overwhelming support and pressure” from the public to form the government. While Mr. Sisodia had said most respondents wanted the party to form a government, the AAP maintained that the final call in this regard would be taken on the basis of an analysis of the responses received till Sunday evening.
The party is expected to declare the results of the referendum on Monday.
