Power distribution company BSES has advised consumers to ask for the identity cards of BSES officials visiting their premises. The advisory comes in the wake of the company having apprehended four impostors following a tip-off by a consumer.
According to a company spokesperson, four imposters masquerading as BRPL officials went to the residence of a consumer Vijender Singh in Uttam Nagar and after carrying out an “inspection” of his meter, declared it was tampered and demanded Rs.50,000.
“They gave him two hours to think and promised to call back. The alert consumer, suspicious of their behaviour called up the BSES office and narrated the sequence of events. BRPL officials asked him to play ball,” the spokesperson said.
The consumer was asked to call the imposters to collect the money. “In the meantime, BRPL enforcement officials landed and hid in the consumer's premises. And the minute the masquerading BRPL officials showed up, they were apprehended and taken to the local police station. Based on complaints of the consumer and BRPL officials, a FIR was registered against them at Bindapur police station,” the spokesperson said.
Urging consumers to guard against unscrupulous elements, BSES officials have pointed out that all enforcement related payments (fines and penalties) are to be made only at designated BSES offices.
“Consumers are advised to ascertain and verify the identity of persons who visit their premises claiming to be from BSES. In case of any doubt or anything suspicious, consumers are advised to immediately alert the BSES office,” said the spokesperson.
