A CBI court here on Thursday extended the police remand of Mumbai-based chartered accountant Khem Chand Gandhi and Paresh Chamanlal Budhdev, associated with law firm, Chitale and Associates of Mumbai, for two days in the documents theft case.
Additional Sessions Judge S.C. Rajan extended the remand of the two accused to allow the investigating agency to confront them with two new suspects in the case, K.V. Mohanan, vice president (finance) of the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), and Rajendra Chitale, head of the law firm.
Initially, the court had remanded Gandhi and Chamanlal in two-day police custody when they were produced before it after being brought here on a transit remand from Mumbai.
Seeking extension of the police remand of the two accused, the counsel for the CBI said that the investigating officer had summoned Mohanan and Chitale and wanted to confront the two accused in its custody with them. The counsel further said that the retrieval of data from the email accounts of the accused had revealed payment of money to several other persons in lieu of supply of the classified documents stolen from the Finance and Commerce Ministries.
When the court asked the counsel to name those individuals, he said that he could not reveal their names in the open court. Later, he passed on the list having the names of the recipients of the bribe money to the judge for perusal. The court remanded the other four accused arrested by the CBI in the case in judicial custody till April 1.
