A 25-year-old alleged cattle smuggler from Mewat was arrested, while three of his accomplices managed to give the police a slip after a chase in North Delhi’s Sadar Bazar in the early hours of Friday.
The police, however, seized the vehicle in which the suspects had abandoned the five animals they had allegedly stolen from Siddipura in North Delhi.
The incident took place around 2-45 a.m. when two policemen saw a pick-up truck passing near Rani Jhansi Road. “Head Constable Mukesh and Constable Jitendra, who were both on patrolling duty, got suspicious because the vehicle was being driven at a high speed. They also noticed that it was loaded with animals,” said a police officer.
Mukesh and Jitendra then sought assistance from a Police Control Room vehicle and chased the speeding vehicle.
“When the vehicle reached Matia Khan Chowk, a PCR van staff shot at the rear tyre of the pick-up truck. This resulted in the driver losing balance and ramming a truck. He then reversed his vehicle but by then the police van had positioned itself right behind it,” said the officer.
Sandwiched between the two vehicles, the PCR van had no space to manoeuvre, said the police. As a result, the occupants came out and started running. The policemen followed suit giving them a chase on foot and managed to arrest one of them. The arrested man has been identified as Hakimuddin. A hunt was subsequently launched to arrest the other suspects.
