A cash van driver drove away with Rs.49 lakh from Karol Bagh in Central Delhi on Wednesday. While the vehicle was later found abandoned some distance away, the police have launched a hunt for the driver and his accomplice.
The incident took place around 10-45 a.m. when the cash van owned by a private security agency reached Padam Singh Road in Karol Bagh to replenish an ATM machine. While two of the company representatives, Amit Mitra and Kapil, went inside the ATM booth, guard F.D. Sharma stayed in the van along with the driver named Sanjay (30).
On the pretext of parking the vehicle, Sanjay asked the guard to step out and then drove off. Some distance away, he abandoned the cash van and decamped with an accomplice on a motorcycle. Subsequently the police were alerted.
Preliminary police inquiries revealed that the cash van team had collected Rs.83 lakh from the Jhandewalan office of the security agency. They deposited Rs.34 lakh in two ATM machines near Karol Bagh, following which they reached Padam Singh Road where the incident took place.
The police have registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by the agency representatives. “We have collected details about the driver from his employers,” said a police officer.
