Election to Sarai Pipal Thala ward of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation was cancelled on Friday, after it emerged that one of the candidates had died on Thursday.

Cardiac arrest

Samajwadi Party’s Dinesh passed away at 7.45 p.m. on Thursday after a cardiac arrest, as per the statement of his son and election agent before the Returning Officer on Friday.

The ward, which was supposed to go to polls with the rest of Delhi’s civic bodies on Sunday, would now see a byelection on May 21, said a SEC official.

This is the second ward after Maujpur in East Delhi to have the poll cancelled due to death of a candidate. The Maujpur bypoll would be held on May 14. Of 272 wards, 270 would be going to polls on Sunday.
