The Delhi High Court on Wednesday took exception to a lawyer for “parading” inside the courtroom a bunch of people who were rendered homeless after the demolition of illegal shelters inside the Amir Khusro Park here.
“We are conscious of the problem they face… You do not need to show the people to get empathy,” a Bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C.Hari Shankar remarked.
Advocate Kamlesh Kumar Pandey had brought to the courtroom about 15 people, most of whom were elderly, women and children contending that the local police have been harassing them.
Case posted for Dec 14
“Why bring them here? They must be leaving their livelihood. We don’t need these people who do not understand a single word of what is happening in the court. It’s undignified,” the court remarked.
“It’s very difficult for us when small babies are crying inside the courtroom. Children have no place in a courtroom. Look at the discomfort they are in,” the court told the lawyer.
The court said it will make sure that the displaced people are looked after, but also made it clear that they cannot decide where they will stay. “You cannot say it has to be Nizamuddin,” the Bench noted and posted the case for further hearing on December 14.
