In view of the recent spurt in cases of violence against women, particularly harassment and rape, Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia on Wednesday announced the launch of mass awareness campaigns.
The campaign aimed at ensuring safety and security of women in the Capital would work through the police, urban planners, service providers, transport authorities, community groups, resident groups and non-government organisations for .
Launching the “Safe Delhi For Women Initiative”, organised in association with UNIFEM, Jagori and UN Habitat at Central Park in Connaught Place here, Prof. Walia said the Delhi Government would through the initiative seek to work towards creating a city that is safe and accessible for women and other vulnerable groups.
The Minister said the Government would formulate a strategic framework to address the needs of various stakeholders. “The police will need to work on both preventive measures and show quick and efficient response to cases when reported. Urban planning and design need to incorporate gender as an element in order to design more inclusive cities and public transport needs to be able to provide services that are safe and efficient,’’ she said.
Noting that these are some of the areas that will be addressed in the strategic framework and initiatives, Prof. Walia said it was also necessary that women are empowered in all spheres of life. Through the Bhagidari programme, the Minister said the Government would involve residents’ welfare associations, market trade associations and other groups for making Delhi safe and secure for women.
