In two separate incidents of shooting on Saturday — in Mehrauli and Mayur Vihar Phase I — a businessman and a police constable were injured. While the accused in the first instance was arrested, one of the two accused managed to escape in the second case.

The victim in the first case has been identified as Mehrauli resident Manohar Lal (51). He was shot at allegedly by one Chander at 7.15 a.m. The bullet brushed past his scalp. A call was made to the Police Control Room. The police reached the spot and arrested the accused and purportedly seized the weapon used in the murder. A case has been registered.

It has been learnt that both are traders in Mehrauli market and work for rival factions locked in a battle to establish their monopoly in the business. “The first group is led by Deva and Kanhaiya, while the other, of which Mr. Lal is a member, is led by Prakash,” said a police officer. The victim is out of danger.

In the second case, a police constable was shot in broad daylight when he tried to stop two young men from snatching a chain in a busy market in Mayur Vihar Phase -I.

Constable Sandeep Punia, who is posted at Pandav Nagar police station, was on patrol duty near the DDA market when the incident happened.

“Around 2.15 p.m. he heard a woman screaming. He rushed in her direction and saw two men on a motorcycle trying to snatch her chain. When he tried to stop them, the pillion rider threatened to shoot him. When he refused to relent, the man took out a firearm and shot Sandeep on the left hand. Hearing the commotion, those present in the market gathered near the crime scene and caught hold of the attacker. But one riding the bike managed to drive away,” said a police officer.

Sandeep was shifted to a nearby hospital, where he is out of danger. The accused was allegedly beaten up by the crowd. He was also rushed to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, said the police.
