A sense of disbelief and fear has gripped the residents of Samachar Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase-I here with burglars having struck twice in the past three days and making off with cash and valuables.
“When we got up on Saturday, we noticed the door of a neighbouring flat open. Since the family was away and the house was locked for almost two months, we got suspicious. We stepped inside to find that the house had been ransacked. Another incident came to light on Sunday night when a family returned home after a few days and found the house burgled. The two burglaries within a span of a few days have created a sense of fear among the residents,” said Subimal Choudhuri, president of the group housing society. “It is for the first time in the past 20 years and that such incidents have taken place inside the society premises. The society is considered very safe and secure but its security has been compromised with a Delhi Metro rail parking lot becoming functional recently. It shares the boundary with our society. The road leading up to the parking lot has been raised and now anyone can scale the society wall with ease,” Mr. Choudhuri added.
Society general secretary Shri Krishna, said: “Several adjoining societies have also witnessed burglaries, snatchings and robberies over the past few years. We have a meeting with the local police officers in this regard on Tuesday and will take up the matter with them.”
The police said the Samachar cases were an insider’s job. “The society houses over 250 flats. It is very difficult for an outsider to find out which house is locked. It is an insider’s job. We have interrogated the security guards, plumbers, vendors and maids frequenting the society and are hopeful of a breakthrough soon,” said Mayur Vihar SHO A. S. Negi.
