Building power grid over a pond

: Residents of Fatehpur village in Asola are an angry lot after engineers started dumping mud in a nearby water body to reclaim land for the construction of a power grid.

Around 15 years ago, before the privatisation of power distribution in the Capital, the Delhi government had allotted the pond land for the power grid. After privatisation in 2003, the project was put on a back burner. However, last year the project was revived by discom BSES and the work on the grid started in December.

However, no one seems to know exactly what comes under the land allotted for the grid and whether the pond is part of it.

Even the Revenue Department is not sure whether the land allotted is the water body or a portion of the water body. “The demarcation of land is yet to take place,” said a senior Revenue official.

With confusion over jurisdiction of the land, as both Saket and Mehrauli SDM’s claim that the land is not theirs, the NGT had on Monday ordered a bailable warrant against the SDM of Mehrauli, DS Verma. For the residents of the village, who still don’t have access to proper sewer lines, it’s a big problem.
