A four-storey building collapsed in Sadar Bazar’s Paan Mandi area on Friday evening. Two persons suffered minor injuries in the incident.

A rescue operation was under way till late evening to make sure no one was stuck under the debris, the police said.

Around 4.15 p.m., 35-year-old Ganga Ram was sitting on the ground floor of the building — which had four garment shops – with seven others.

Mr. Ganga, an employee at one of the shops who also runs a tea stall, heard the roof collapsing and a few bricks rolling down.

“I came outside and figured that the building was about to fall. I immediately alerted others who came out running,” he said. But, Mr. Ganga’s younger brother Raja Ram and another employee Raju suffered injuries while trying to escape who were taken to St Stephen’s Hospital.

Several complaints

The building, locals claimed, was over 100 years old and the three floors above the shops was used as godown by several shopkeepers of the market.

“The building had cracks in the walls. We had made several complaints to the owner and even officials of North Municipal Corporation but nobody took note of it,” alleged Mr. Ganga.

Senior officials of the North Delhi Muncipal Corporation said that the building was not in the list of dangerous buildings.
