BSP, BJP stage walkout in U.P. Assembly

March 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - LUCKNOW:

The Samajwadi Party Government came under fire from the Opposition parties on the law and order situation and the destruction of crop on account of the unseasonal rains and hailstorm in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday. The Opposition protest on the two issues was marked by walkout by the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs.

The House, which met after the Holi recess, was thrown into disorder in the Question Hour with the Opposition MLAs on their feet against what they called, the deteriorating law and order situation and the loss to farmers on account of the inclement weather conditions in the State. The Opposition MLAs demanded that there should be a discussion in the House. Unable to convince the Speaker, Mata Prasad Pandey, the BJP MLAs staged a dharna in the Well of the House.

As disorder continued, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mohammad Azam Khan said it was a pre-planned strategy of the BJP as a “Bill on farmers is to be introduced in Parliament”. Order was restored when the BJP members returned to their seats.

When the Question Hour resumed, the BSP staged a walkout expressing its dissatisfaction over the reply given by the Government on a query related to the number of policemen killed in incidents of attacks on policemen by anti-social elements from March 15, 2012 to September 2014. In his reply to the question on the number of attacks on policemen in the aforementioned period, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said 622 incidents have come to light from March 15, 2012 to September , 2014. He said FIRs were lodged in all the cases and action was taken against 3936 persons.

Stating that cases have been registered, Mr. Khan added that steps have been taken to prevent such recurrences.

‘New record’

Suresh Kumar Khanna of the BJP took a dig at the Government when he said that a new record has been registered, adding that when policemen are not safe how can the safety of others be assured by the Government. Mr. Khanna wanted to how many Samajwadi Party workers were involved in these incidents.

Leader of Opposition, Swami Prasad Maurya wanted to know how many policemen were killed in these incidents and have the accused persons been arrested.
