A young man allegedly stabbed his minor sister to death in their house in Mandawali here around Monday midnight for refusing to sever relations with their neighbour. The accused is absconding.

The girl, a Class XI student, was living with her family in West Vinod Nagar. A few months ago, she allegedly became friends with a boy who lived in the same locality. The boy, who works as a supervisor with a dairy products contractor, later shifted to a nearby house of a relative.

It is alleged that when the girl’s family came to know about the affair, they tried to dissuaded her. On Monday night, she allegedly went to the boy’s residence purportedly without telling her parents. Taking the matter seriously, the boy’s relatives immediately informed her family. The girl’s relatives then took her back and were trying to reason with her when her elder brother Sujeet picked up a knife and allegedly stabbed her in the stomach.

While Sujeet fled from the spot along with the weapon, the girl was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital by her mother Sunita. She succumbed to her injuries at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

Stating that a murder case had been registered on a complaint lodged by the 17-year-old victim’s mother, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Delhi) Prabhakar said it was not a case of honour killing. “Only one family member, the victim’s brother, is allegedly involved in the case,” he said. “There was no family restriction on the girl,” said a police statement on Tuesday evening.

Enquiries revealed that the family belongs to Samastipur in Bihar. The victim’s father, Ram Kumar, is in the business of wood-work contracts. His first wife -- from whom he had two daughters and two sons -- passed away in 1998, after which he married Sunita and has a daughter from her. The victim was the youngest among the four children from the first wife and the accused the third.

Neighbours alleged that the girl, under pressure to sever her friendship with the boy, had stopped going to school about a fortnight ago. “The facts are being verified. A crime team visited the spot ,” said a police officer. The post-mortem had been conducted and the body handed over to the family.
