A Delhi court on Friday sought a reply from Tihar jail authorities on a complaint of sexual harassment filed by a British national inmate.

The complainant is in jail for his alleged involvement in recruiting youths for terrorist outfit al-Qaeda.

‘Touched inappropriately’

The inmate, Samiun Rahman, of Bangladeshi origin, alleged in his complaint that on November 2, Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) personnel came to search his cell and around five TSP personnel searched his body and “touched me very inappropriately”.

Rahman filed the complaint in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Siddharth Sharma at the Patiala House courts.

“Usually, only one TSP personnel used to search my body in a proper way but yesterday [Nov. 2] all the five TSP personnel searched (touched) and touched my private part... after this they told me to strip and all of them, one by one, touched my rectum... and deliberately harassed me sexually,” he further alleged.

‘Being targeted’

The inmate alleged that he was facing such types of harassment because he is a British national and urged the court to look into the matter and order the area Station House Officer to lodge an FIR against the five ‘culprits’.

The jail’s internal security is entrusted with the TSP.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police had arrested Rahman in September for his alleged involvement in recruiting Rohingya Muslims for al-Qaeda and training them to fight against the Myanmar army. He had also planned to set up bases in Mizoram or Manipur to train radicalised youths, the investigating agency said.

The court directed the jail authorities to respond to the application by November 8.
