A 51-year-old British national was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside his hotel room in Central Delhi’s Paharganj on Monday.
According to the police, the semi-decomposed body was recovered from Hotel Krishna Cottage around 3 a.m. The victim was later identified as Stephen James.
“We received a PCR call from the hotel staff after they noticed foul smell coming out of room number 102 and the door was locked from inside,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District) Alok Kumar.
A police team was rushed to the hotel which broke open the door. The body was found lying clad in a towel. James was last seen by the staff on Saturday evening. Till now nothing suspicious has been found, so the possibility of murder has been ruled out, he said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death, the police said.
“James had checked-in on July 3. On July 6, he had gone to speak to the hotel manager as he had to clear some dues. It appears that James had consumed alcohol since a bottle and a glass were found on the table in his room. All his valuables, including Indian currency, mobile phone and other items, are intact and appear untouched. The British Embassy has been informed about the incident by the police,” a senior police officer said. — PTI
