A 25-year-old man who worked as a bouncer at a club in Chanakyapuri is among the three men arrested for allegedly cloning ATM cards and withdrawing money from people’s accounts, the police said on Thursday.

The police busted the gang while investigating a case of firing at an officer in Delhi Cantonment.

Vipin Dagar (25), who was a bouncer, Praveen Dagar (24) and Ajay Kumar (23) were apprehended in Goa by the State police on January 17, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Milind Mahadeo Dumbere.

Chased by police

One of the accused had fired at an officer in Delhi Cantonment on January 11 when he asked them to stop them. The officer had allegedly found their movements suspicious.

The officer called a colleague for backup and both of them chased the car in which the accused were travelling. The car in which the accused were travelling hit the divider during the chase but they managed to escape leaving the vehicle behind.

Fake ATM cards

“The car was seized. The officers also seized ATM cards, ATM slips and an IP camera. Later, the cards were found to be fake,” said Mr. Dumbere.

The car was found registered in Vipin’s name and his number was obtained. Mr. Dumbere said they discovered his bank account details, which revealed that he was in Goa since the firing. The police then sought information about Vipin from the airport. They were informed that he had gone to Goa with Praveen and Ajay.

“With help of technical surveillance, we got a lead that the accused were at a guest house in Goa’s Calangute. We shared the information with Goa Police, who apprehended the accused on January 17,” he said.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly told the police that they were on the way to the airport on January 11 when they asked to stop. Their friend Banti Dhankar, who was dropping them, is still absconding.

The police said the accused would target ATM booths without guards. They would install a skimmer device to clone cards and the IP camera just above the keypad to know the pin. “Vipin was a bouncer, who started helping Ajay and Praveen in cloning cards. Praveen is involved in card cloning cases in Baba Haridas Nagar and Leh. Ajay is involved in a similar case in Haryana,” said Mr. Dumbere, adding that efforts are on to nab Banti.
