The bodies of a 16-year-old girl and her 22-year-old neighbour Raj Kumar--both of whom had gone missing from their houses in Inderpuri in South-West Delhi on April 29--were fished out from the Yamuna here on Saturday. Both the victims were bound to each other through their wrists.
Incidentally, the girl’s family had earlier in a complaint lodged with the Delhi Police accused Raj Kumar of kidnapping her. It is learnt that the police had recovered a suicide note from the girl’s house a day after she had gone missing. In the note, the girl had purportedly claimed that she and the man had decided to kill themselves due to the objection raised by their families, who refused to acknowledge their relationship and often prevented the two from meeting each other.
According to the police, it was around 3-30 p.m. on Saturday that a call was made to the Police Control Room about a male and a female body floating in the Yamuna below the Nizamuddin Bridge in South-East Delhi. A police team soon rushed to the spot and brought the bodies out of the river. A senior police officer said the two bodies were tied to each other with a dupatta.
“A few hours later the bodies were identified as Sonal (name changed) and Raj Kumar and it came to our knowledge that both of them had gone missing at Inderpuri in South-West Delhi and a case had also been registered there under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code. The bodies were sent for post mortem, the result of which has not come,” said the officer. He added that prima facie it appeared that drowning was the cause of the deaths and that it was unlikely that the duo jumped from the bridge due to the high grills built along the river.
Meanwhile, a police officer in Inderpuri said that the same day the girl went missing, her parents approached the police and expressed suspicion that Raj Kumar could be behind her disappearance.
“Raj Kumar, too, was not found at his house and we initiated a search for the two. The following day, a note kept between the pages of one of her books was found at Sonal’s house which her family provided to us. In the note she had written that both she and Raj Kumar wanted to end their lives. We continued our search but were told on Saturday about the recovery of the bodies. After the post-mortem, we handed the bodies back to the families,” said the officer.
