‘Blood of slaughtered animals mustn’t flow into Yamuna’

September 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

On the eve of Id-ul-Zuha, the National Green Tribunal on Thursday directed the Delhi government and other civic agencies and government bodies concerned to ensure that no blood of slaughtered animal is allowed to flow directly into Yamuna.

The Tribunal passed the order on a petition filed by Ojasvi Party against the pollution caused in the river due to slaughtering of cattle.

“The applicant makes a grievance about pollution of River Yamuna as a result of spilling of blood of the slaughtered animals,” the Bench noted while issuing notices to the Delhi government, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and others in the interest of justice.

“In the meanwhile, the respondents (government and others) shall ensure that no blood of slaughtered animals is allowed to flow directly into the River Yamuna. List this matter on 8th October, 2015,” said a Bench headed by Justice U.D. Salvi.

In general, blood from slaughtered animals flows directly into sewers which drain into Yamuna.

Tonnes of blood flows into Yamuna from various districts in the NCR and the neighbouring State of Uttar Pradesh.

In the absence of proper treatment plants the waste water is severely polluting the river water.
