Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Shahdara, Jitender Singh Shunty, had a narrow escape on Wednesday morning when an unidentified gunman fired at him at his Vivek Vihar residence in East Delhi.

The incident was captured by a CCTV camera installed at the MLA's house.

The footage shows a man wearing a helmet entering the driveway around 5.30 a.m. He knocks repeatedly on one of the two doors. When nobody opens it , he waits for a minute and then knocks on the other door . After a while, Mr. Shunty is seen coming out of the house. As soon as he comes out, the man gives him a paper, which Mr. Shunty starts to examine. Within seconds, the man is seen pulling Mr. Shunty towards himself and a scuffle ensues between the two as Mr. Shunty tries to push the man out of the main gate. After almost a minute into the scuffle, the man pulls out a pistol and fires four rounds at Mr. Shunty. Fortunately all of them miss him.

The assailant fled immediately from the spot after firing. Talking to reporters at his residence later, Mr. Shunty said: “The man who came to my house gave me a document and asked me to attest it. I asked him what is it and why should I attest it, but he ordered me to keep mum and sign the document. After a few seconds he grabbed my collar. I tried to get inside the house but the door got locked from inside. Then he pulled me towards himself, I thought he was trying to kidnap me and I resisted his attempt. Then suddenly he put one hand inside his pocket and I realised that he is going to shoot me. I ran and tried to hide behind the car.”

The Delhi Police later ordered its Crime Branch and Special Cell to probe the matter along with the local police.
