BJP, Congress corner AAP over infighting

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress cornered the Aam Aadmi Party Government on allegations of lack of transparency and political opportunism even as the internal rift within the latter widened here on Friday.

While Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay claimed that Mr. Kejriwal, who had claimed political honesty, purity and swaraj, had turned out to be a political stuntman and an opportunist instead of an able administrator, the Congress, while restricting itself from commenting on the internal goings-on of the AAP, termed the episode ‘unfortunate’.

“It is strange that the leaders who resigned on the issue of Lokpal are disregarding the internal Lokpal of the party and the judiciary. The latest example is the strong views of the Court against the Minister Jitender Singh Tomar but Mr. Kejriwal is not taking any action against him,” said Mr. Upadhyay in a statement.

“I would not like to comment on what is going on in another party but I will say this – it is unfortunate that a party that claimed it was the most transparent of us all is anything but that,” Mr, Maken, president of the Delhi Congress, said.

Meanwhile, both the BJP and the Congress questioned the effect the infighting within the AAP was bound to have on the functioning of the Delhi Government.

Mr. Maken said, “There are several large swathes of the Capital where long power cuts are occurring and the water problems of Delhi are just around the corner. Instead of trying to prevail over these issues which directly affect the people, Mr. Kejriwal is too busy trying to hold his party together.”

Mr. Upadhyay said that lack of action by the Government, which claimed packages of change, had left the people “crying for water and power even before the start of the summer season.”

“The traders are being harassed due to threats of raid under the pressure of collecting more revenue. The women are waiting for guards in the buses and the RWAs for the CCTV. But the Government is busy in infighting and is freely distributing the high level posts among the MLAs to survive,” Mr. Upadhyay said.

Referring to the emergence of a sting video, purportedly showing Mr. Kejriwal abusing Mr. Yadav and Mr. Bhushan, Congress Delhi in-charge PC Chacko said it evidenced “what kind of people they (the AAP) are; their true colours have been exposed.”
