Shyama Prasad Mukherjee or Mahatma Gandhi - whose name will be inscribed on Delhi’s tallest building?

Even before the completion of construction of the 112-metre high Civic Centre, which will house the new MCD headquarters, the ruling BJP and opposition Congress in the civic body are locking horns over the issue.

“We will name the building after Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. It will be a fitting tribute to him,” Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya said here after an inspection tour of the building where MCD hopes to shift by April.

Mr. Mukherjee was the founder of Jan Sangh, the predecessor of BJP.

However, Leader of opposition Congress’ J. K. Sharma said, “It would be better if it is named after the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.”

BJP said it wants to name the different blocks of the Rs. 550 crore building after various rivers of India.
