BJD, BJP enter into war of words

Accuse each other of playing political games

June 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 05:02 pm IST - BHUBANESWAR:

The ongoing blame game between the ruling BJD and the Opposition BJP reached a new high in Odisha on Wednesday with both sides accusing each other of playing political games.

While the BJP staged demonstrations at all block headquarters across the State in protest against the attack on the convoy of two Central Ministers in Bargarh district last week, the BJD staged a dharna outside the Raj Bhavan in protest against the alleged Central negligence towards the State in the agriculture sector.

‘No action taken’

The BJP protestors accused the BJD government of failing to take action against the BJD activists who attacked the convoy of Union Ministers Santosh Gangwar and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti on June 24 while they were on their way to attend a Vikas Parv rally.

Terming the administrative inquiry ordered into the Bargarh incident an eyewash, senior BJP leaders announced that the party will organise a massive demonstration near Raj Bhavan on July 4.

‘Misleading people’

The BJP also termed the BJD dharna outside Raj Bhavan as a ploy to mislead the people in the name of welfare of the farmers. It criticised the BJD government for not admitting that any farmer in the State had committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden though over 200 farmers had committed suicide since last year.

On the other hand, the BJD dharna outside Raj Bhavan was attended by several Ministers and senior leaders of the party who criticised the Narendra Modi Government for neglecting the cause of the farmers of Odisha.

Amid slogan shouting, the BJP workers held demonstration in all the blocks of the State alleging that the attack was “pre-planned” and it was perpetrated at the “behest of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik”.

The BJP has also planned an agitation near Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on July 4 and a party delegation is expected to meet the President to apprise him of the violence perpetrated by the BJD workers at Bargarh, senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra said.

Hitting out at the BJD government, BJP’s State unit president Basant Panda said no arrest has been made so for even after five days, while immediate action had been taken against those who had demonstrated near the Chief Minister’s cavalcade in the past and they were booked for attempt to murder.

Another senior leader and former Odisha BJP president Suresh Pujari claimed no action has been taken against those involved in the “murderous” attack whereas attempt to murder charge had been slapped against people for pelting eggs at CM’s cavalcade.
