: A criminal case has been registered by the Delhi Police in connection with the ongoing fires at the Bhalswa landfill. There have been several blazes at the site for the past few weeks.
Environment Minister Imran Hussain and officials of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee had visited the site in North Delhi on Thursday. The FIR was registered late on Thursday night based on a complaint by the DPCC.
“We have registered an FIR against unknown persons based on the complaint submitted at Jahangirpuri police station,” said a senior police officer on Friday.
The case has been registered under Section 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the IPC. The offence is bailable and can attract a maximum punishment of two years.
Meanwhile, a committee set up by the Delhi government to look into the fires, will be giving its report soon.
Special Secretary (Environment) Kulanand Joshi, who is the chairperson of the inquiry committee, said that the members would be visiting the site over the weekend and giving their report in three days.
On Friday, the Environment Minister held a meeting with representatives of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the sub-divisional magistrates concerned, local police and fire departments and the DPCC to come up with a plan to prevent the landfill fires. Mr. Hussain ordered the area SDM to act against the North Corporation if they fail to control the fire.
He asked the area SHO to deploy a mobile squad to prevent people form entering the landfill without authorisation.
The police official, however, said it was not possible to control access to the site and the concerned civic agencies would have to do it themselves.
