The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested four persons for allegedly betting during an ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) match. The accused were caught red-handed from South Delhi’s Neb Sarai.
The police said some personnel received a tip-off around 9.30 p.m. that betting was taking place at Krishna Park.
Acting on the lead, the police raided the area and found the accused betting during the match between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant.
Accused Subhash (26), Sachin (27), Gurpreet (25) and Deepak (26) were watching the match and using mobile phones to keep in touch with people who were placing bets.
“The beat and patrolling staff was asked to stay alert and gather information about the movement of criminals in the area. That’s how they received information about these men,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ishwar Singh.
Losses in business
According to the police, about 60 people had placed bets to the tune of ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh through the accused, who were constantly in touch with them as the game progressed.
The accused told the police that they had turned to betting after suffering losses in business.
“They’re all friends. Due to a slowdown in property business, they formed their own betting group to make easy money,” said Mr. Singh.
The police have registered a case under Sections 3 and 4 of the Gambling Act, and recovered 15 mobile phones, one laptop and an LED television.
