Work on Phase III of the Barapullah flyover project is likely to get delayed as the Aam Aadmi Party government has asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to fund the project.

The foundation stone for the Rs. 1260.63 crore project, which will connect east Delhi to south Delhi, was laid by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in December last year. Work for the project, with a completion deadline of December 2017, was to begin in March.

However, now the project is likely to get delayed as the State government has written to the DDA, requesting them to fund the project. “We have written to the DDA to fund the project as they (DDA) too are working for the development of Delhi,” PWD Minister Satyendra Jain said on Thursday.

The Minister said the State government is even “ready to hand over the project to the DDA if the land agency sets that as a condition for funding it”.

Besides demanding fund from the Central agency, the State government has also decided to explore revenue generation for the project by branding the Phase III project. “A feasibility study will be conducted to generate revenue through possibility of advertisement,” Mr. Jain said.

An elevated corridor from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Sarai Kale Khan over Barapullah Nullah was constructed by the PWD in 2010 under Phase I of the Barapullah project. Phase III of the project is an extension of the project that involves construction of flyover, loop roads besides a bridge over Yamuna connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar Phase 1.

The project involves construction of an additional flyover at Mayur Vihar Phase-I, running parallel to the existing one at Mayur Vihar, besides one additional auxiliary lane 3.5m wide connecting two loops. Along with this, two loops of 7.5m width – for turning right from NH-24 to Akshardham and from Noida to NH-24 is also to be constructed.

Mr. Jain said, additional features have been added after he held a review of the project. “The pedestrian way would be converted into a jogging park. A loop would also be provided for the jogging track. This would put in place a six kilometre long jogging track around the flyover,” Mr. Jain said.
