Rs.3,000 crore road project planned for West Delhi
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday laid the foundation of the first extension of the Barapulla elevated corridor, which will now take this flyover, which traverses the Sarai Kale Khan-Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stretch, all the way up to INA Market, 3.98 km ahead. The project will cost an estimated Rs.530 crore.
While the elevated corridor was commissioned under the first phase during the Commonwealth Games from Sarai Kale Khan to Nehru Stadium, the extension being undertaken as Phase II will make travel up to INA Market smoother.
Ms. Dikshit said the government has also decided to extend the elevated road on the other end from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar across the Yamuna under Phase III of the project. The commissioning of all the phases will significantly reduce the travel time between Mayur Vihar in East Delhi and South Delhi.
Ms. Dikshit said it was to improve the utilisation of the entire Barapulla corridor that more elevated roads were being added to it. The extension up to INA Market at Aurobindo Marg has already been cleared by the UTTIPEC and Archaeological Survey, she said, adding that the road on this section will have two carriageways of nine metre width each.
Besides, she said, a total of six loops will be constructed to provide connectivity from Barapulla Elevated Road towards Ashram; from Siddharth Enclave to Barapulla Elevated Road; from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg into the elevated corridor to Aurobindo Marg; near Sanchar Bhawan for movement from elevated corridor to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg; at Thyagraj Stadium for movement into the elevated corridor to Sarai Kale Khan; and near Aurobindo Marg for movement from elevated corridor towards Safdarjung Airport. She said now Delhi is bound to get another landmark in form of Signature Bridge, which will make the congested Wazirabad Junction signal-free.
The Delhi Public Works Department Minister said the government will soon take up another mega project to make the Outer Ring Road signal free from Meera Bagh to Wazirabad. This Rs.3,000-crore project will involve construction of six flyovers/elevated portions between Vikaspuri and Meera Bagh; Meera Bagh and Deepali Chowk; Badli and Mukarba Chowk; and three other flyovers between Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad. This road will later be extended up to Noida. Besides this, a parallel six lane road near supplementary drain will be constructed around Mukarba Chowk and other congested portions.
