Professionally managed paid parking lots should be allowed in Delhi like in global cities and senior officers should be made responsible for the maintenance of municipal assets, Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal said at a meeting where he reviewed the functioning of the civic bodies, on Monday.

The meeting, held at Raj Niwas, was attended by the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Principal Commissioner, Delhi Development Authority, CEO, DUSIB, and the Commissioners of the three civic bodies.

“The three Commissioners apprised the L-G about the measures being adopted for cleanliness and sanitation in Delhi,” said a senior government official.

He added that the south corporation commissioner informed the L-G that an integrated system of garbage collection had been started in the central zone, two mechanical sweeping machines have been hired for Dwarka Sub-city and 590 toilets at restaurants and petrol pumps had been notified as free public toilets.

The north corporation commissioner told the L-G that 2,000 trash cans had been placed, 313 restaurants and petrol pumps had been notified for free use by female citizens and that out of 251 open gyms, 77 had been completed while work was on to install street furniture at three locations. The civic body has also taken up the redevelopment of four MCD and DDA markets and installed 3,700 street furniture in markets and parks.

The east corporation commissioner apprised Mr. Baijal about the civic body’s target to purchase 5,000 trash cans of which 1,600 had been bought, and plans to set up 30 open gyms by the end of September.

“The L-G asked the commissioners to procure mechanical sweeping machines and expedite cleaning of roads,” the official said. Mr. Baijal also directed the civic bodies to work on developing paid parking lots and re-emphasised that areas under flyovers should be beautified and asked the commissioners to expedite the installation of water ATMs, the official added.
